UX/UI case study · Editorial · 2022

Sports2go

A visual-first sports & gaming editorial for readers who would rather watch than read.

This case study is about our latest project at Ironhack. We were asked to create an editorial for the user persona that was given to us by our teachers.

User Persona

Eric is a 21 years old young guy who dropped his university and wants to travel around the world. He is into sports and gaming. He also doesn’t like to read too much. These pieces of information already gave us some ideas about our main focus points. To understand our users better, we interviewed some people with common interests in sports and gaming.

After we got all the feedback from our survey, we decided to build an editorial that covers a range of topics on both non-traditional sports like gaming and traditional sports like football or basketball.

Research Hypothesis

Creating a website that provides more video and podcast content instead of long texts will be more appealing to the user.

Ideation

How might we give information with less text and more visuals or audio?

Competitors

When we looked at our main competitors, we analyzed not only the content but also their visual looks, like the fonts they use, colors, layout, etc.

In the early stages of finding the best concept for our editorial, we created a mood board that helped us to generate ideas. It gave us a foundation of what our project can feel and look like.

Moodboard

Each of the visuals we selected for our mood board is representing a piece of content, a feeling, and a color that the users can find on our website.

User flow

We created a specific user flow to show how the users can directly access the information without reading too much text. In our case,

  • Eric is first skimming through the landing page to keep up with the latest news.
  • To check the latest sports results, he clicks on the scores in the top navigation bar.
  • Manchester derby takes his attention and after he sees the score he clicks on the ‘watch the goals’ button.
  • After checking the goals, he goes to the ‘podcast’ section in the navigation bar.
  • Amongst the most popular podcasts, he finds the one about the premier league and clicks on it.
  • Since the podcasts are a premium feature of the website, he sees a pop-up screen that tells him to sign up or log in.

From the early stages of the design process, we knew it is crucial to test and get feedback from the testers. With the feedback from the usability tests, we noticed that we needed some extra navigation buttons and to arrange the spacing. Furthermore, most users stated that it would be nice to have a comment section for the videos on the website.

Next Step

Our next step is to add more screens to the app and test the prototype more deeply.

Adding more micro animations.
